Skyping

Dustin and I chatted on skype the other night. I turned on my video, but he could not get his going, so I helped him by talking to him and also shared my screen to show and tell him what to do to get his video going. We were able to troubleshoot his and carry on a video chat. I have also text-chatted with Beverly referring to class assignments. I think there are endless uses for Skype in education. Students and teachers or students and students can collaborate and help each other when needed from anywhere!

Required Readings

You Tube

I think you Tube could be used for great things in the classroom. I think that videos are interesting to my students and I would love for them to be able to create and post them on You Tube to share with others. We could also access others. My school does block You Tube, so it might be a good idea for me to use the recommended software to rip videos.

Minding My Space

There is a school district in California that allows and monitors all student’s web accounts. They have e-mail, myspace, etc. They believe instead of outsmarting the students we should educate them and monitor what they are doing. Most parents do not even do this. They have taken the time to teach kids what is appropriate and not appropriate.

WebQuests

A real webquest allows students to use the Internet to research answers to questions. They are going to find answers and record them on the web. This article also suggests having students research with different role, answer the question from different perspectives. Students are required to make their own outcomes not simply repeat someone else’s thoughts. Do not ask broad questions that are already on the web, make it personal and local. Also, have them predict what will happen if…

Blogging

Blogs can be used as discussion boards when reading novels, as a way to have multiple contributors, as a place for students to turn in work. RSS allows you to receive only new updates from the many blogs you are interested. The info is sent to you and you do not have to find it. It also suggests several sites to create your own blog and RSS.

Web Application

Sara Little and I will be presenting http://www.evernote.com/ and http://typewith.me/geometricterms on Sunday.
We will have everyone log into typewith.me and list geometric terms. Each student will then sign up for a web-based evernote account. They will search the web, copy and paste, and label examples on their evernote note. They will e-mail it to me and I will demonstrate how to save the individual notes into one shared notebook and allow everyone to view the shared notebook.
